Sister Dorothy Anne Flood

Sister Dorothy Anne Flood

Sister Dorothy had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 64 years. Sister Dorothy was born in Syracuse on April 12, 1926, daughter of the late Charles and Marion Edgeworth Flood. After graduating from St. Vincent de Paul High School and attending Powelson Business Institute, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1944. Sister Dorothy received a bachelor's degree in music from The College of Saint Rose, a master's degree in music from Boston University and a doctorate in music education from Columbia University. In addition, she pursued post-graduate studies at Ohio State University, focusing on music in medieval life and culture. In 1958, she began a 38-year career in the music department of The College of Saint Rose, beginning as a piano instructor, moving to professor of music and serving as department chairperson. In 1994, Sister Dorothy was part of Sisters in Song, a national choir of Catholic sisters who made several recordings in Anaheim, Calif. Sister Dorothy possessed an enthusiastic and impassioned commitment both to her music and to her students. She was gifted with the ability to help students get to the core of a piece of music and find the best mechanism to make that piece come to life. In addition, Sister Dorothy was an extraordinary storyteller with a humorous anecdote for every occasion. Sister Dorothy was devoted to her faith, her family, her friends and her religious community, and her energetic presence will be missed by many. Sister Dorothy is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families, with special mention of Mary, Leo and Olivia Wong whose devotion was such a comfort; by many friends, including her dear friend, Sister Mary Anne Nelson; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Rev. Robert Flood, CSB; by her sister, Eleanor Murphy; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Salve, Vale

Hi, Dot!

Now you are your new self! I’m sure you must like it. Are you called Dot, or Dorth, or Dorothy, or some other name that God called you before you were born?

Please say hello to our friends — Bob, Eleanor, Louis, Aunt Helen, and my family — Janice, Harry (and Uncle Harry and Auntie Nee Chang, and Uncle Tin, and all other uncles and aunties, and Ah Kungs and Ah Pos). Is Hindemith there? Is Beethoven still decomposing?

Love to Sister Bridget and CSJs who went ahead of you. See you in eternity. I may have to introduce myself, since I am sure you won't recognize me. Perhaps you’ll help me be more on earth as you are in heaven.

Aloha,
Leo
